The UPMC Eye Center has recently become one of the country's foremost providers of ophthalmologic testing for patients. The center houses one fo the widest arrays of newly developed testing equipment in the country that provides state-of-the art diagnostic capabilities, which allow for heretofore unattainable information about the status of the eye. Advanced diagnostic capabilities promote early disease detection and unparalleled treatment options. Brief descriptions of some of the imaging technology offered are found below:
OCT: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) images structures in the back of the eye using low-coherence interferometry, which is much like ultrasound except that light is used instead of sound waves.
HRT2: The Heidelberg retinal tomograph (HRT2) scans the contour of the optic nerve and creates a three-dimensional picture of the structures in the back of the eye. Results are also stored on the computer so that if a subsequent test is requried, any changes can be evaluated by the computer as well as the doctor.
GDx: Glaucoma diagnosis nerve fiber layer analyzer (GDx) measures thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer lost through glaucoma and other retinal diseases. It measures the tissue differently than any other device and can help evaluate the site of damage prior to any vision loss.
FDT: Frequency doubling technology (FDT) is a new type of visual field test that utilizes shifting lines to detect damage to cells early in a disease process. Clinical studies are currently assessing the use of this test and comparing it to more traditional methods of visual field testing.
