Dr. Bhat grew up in Beaumont, Texas before finishing high school in the suburbs of Houston. After high school, he attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in neurobiology. He was awarded a full-tuition merit-based scholarship and subsequently graduated from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center - Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso, Texas. After medical school, Dr. Bhat worked as an intern at Medstar Washington Hospital Center and then completed residency at the George Washington University, where he served as co-chief resident in his final year.

Amar and his wife Saalini, a dentist, love spending their time traveling the world together. They also enjoy playing tennis, hiking, and cheering on Houston sports teams.
