A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. David Rooney graduated from Wake Forest University with a BA in History. He went on to work as an AmeriCorps VISTA member for the non-profit organization Impact America, where he conducted vision screenings throughout low-income areas of Alabama. As a medical student at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Dr. Rooney performed medical research at the Singapore National Eye Centre and volunteered his time at Equal Access Birmingham, a medical school-affiliated free health clinic. Dr. Rooney subsequently completed his ophthalmology residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. During residency, he volunteered at local free health clinics and participated in a medical mission to western Kenya. Dr. Rooney has presented medical research at several national and international medical conferences, and his work has been published in numerous academic journals, including the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Journal of Glaucoma. A recipient of the New World Medical Humanitarian Fellowship Award, Dr. Rooney looks forward to continuing his international mission work after completion of his glaucoma fellowship. In his free time, Dr. Rooney enjoys documentaries, backpacking, and whitewater rafting.
