Mission Statement and Program Description
The UPMC Eye Center at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University, offers one-year residency programs in Ocular Disease and a combination program in Low Vision Rehabilitation/Ocular Disease. The mission of the Optometric Residency Program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is to provide a comprehensive and advanced educational experience beyond the four-year optometric curriculum while supporting and promoting equal employment opportunity, human dignity, and racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity. The Ocular Disease residency focuses on attaining advanced competencies in diagnosis and management of ocular disease. The combined Low Vision Rehabilitation and Ocular Disease program exposes residents to various stages of ocular diseases, particularly those causing severe visual impairment, enhancing competencies in diagnosis, management, disease prognosis, visual rehabilitation, and appropriate referrals. Our residency programs aim to balance diverse clinical and didactic education from all ophthalmic subspecialties, preparing optometrists to go forth into their careers prepared as leaders, educators, researchers, and exceptional clinicians.
